Sidewalk – clearing campaign & impacts on business on Hoang Hoa Tham street

After one – month launched pavement – cleanup campaign, with joint forces  including local officers and citizens, Hoang Hoa Tham street has become more brighter; however, business in this street has got numerous difficulties due to the campaign.

Yesterday, an in-person interview was conducted in Hoang Hoa Tham street which is well-known for traditional sale of bonsais and flowers to gain the personal views on the impact of this sidewalk – clearing campaign.        

Generally, it is a widely articulated view that many public spaces in the pavement have been returned to pedestrians. Thanks to organizational arrangement of bonsais and flowers, this street has become brighter and cleaner.

Besides positive viewpoints, the divergent views are shared sincerely. Although most bonsai shopkeeper have obeyed the passed law about pavement clearing, several shopkeepers, especially small-scale ones, still have illegal occupancy on the sidewalk.

When interviewed about the reason why they have not obeyed the law, Nguyen T. N – an vendor in a long run in Hoang Hoa Tham said: “ This campaign reduces my earning. Although I know I have broken the law, selling my bonsai is my bread. That’s all I can do to earn a living.”

Additionally, several flower shop-keepers shared the profit had decreased significantly since the sidewalk-clearing campaign. Nguyen T. T, a bonsai shop-keeper in Hoang Hoa Tham street said: “Since this campaign has been carried out, the shop’s income has declined approximately 10% per day”. Others shared the same problem and besides Dang T.N, another shop-keeper added: “Customers sometimes complain they had troubles in parking their moto-bikes since the space for parking is too small”.

To bonsai customers, this pavement – cleanup campaign has caused short-term inconvenience. To make a purchase, they have to park their motorbikes in roadway, which has impact on the traffic in Hoang Hoa Tham.

“ Because the parking pavement in Hoang Hoa Tham is so small that I cannot park my motorbike in front of the white line, especially when my favorite store is full of customers”, a customer stated. Tran M. H – a long-standing customer in a Hoang Hoa Tham ‘s store said: “ I obey the law”, “ Everyday, I park my motorbike in the pavement. However, today, the pavement is full of people and there is no room left in the pavement, so I parked my motorbike on the road.”

Asked about this solution, one customer expressed a wish to have a wide parking station somewhere in Hoang Hoa Tham street and they could walk to buy their flowers and bonsai.

With the aforementioned problems, a practical solution is expected to bring convenience to both sellers and buyers in Hoang Hoa Tham street.
